Cajun Slang Cheat Sheet 

Just a few Cajun French terms I let slip every now and then. Where I grew up Cajun French is part of the culture, so I sometimes forget people might have no idea what I'm saying. (sorry!)

I included a few words, terms, and sayings along with their definitions. I used sentence examples from my post How to Dress for a Crawfish Boil. If you want some style tips for an expert, you can read it here. 

Y'all can take a girl out da swamp, but cha can't take da swamp out da girl.

Y'all: (n) you all

Da: (n) the

Cha: (n) you

"Y'all can take a girl out da swamp, but cha can't take da swamp out da girl."

Ça c'est bon: (phrase) That's good!
"If you wear a dress, Ça c'est bon! Quicker bathroom time means you get back to the table faster."

T: (adj) "lil" or little
"Sit by T boy at the table."

Down a ways or Down da Road: (phrase) Referring to a distance
"No matter how careful you are, even if T Boy is down a ways, his (or someone else's) crawfish juices can get ya."

Lagniappe: (n) A little something extra; Bonus
"Lagniappe Tip: The hat can shield your eyes so ya momma and dem can't see which big one you're going for next."

Fixinto: (phrase) About to
"When you're fixinto go to a boil, don't paint your nails."

Sha: (n) Girl; Baby
"Sha, don't be like that."

Ahnvee: (phrase) 'a hankering for'
"If you don't have an Ahnvee for pink shimmery flakes on your crawfish, skip the polish. (trust me)"

Gris Gris: (phrase) Put a spell on
Boo: (n) your baby, your love
"DO NOT wear heels, wedges or anything else you might think help put a Gris Gris on your Boo."
